Tsunami Education Project

The main idea and focus of the TEP was to educate teachers of Junior, O-Level and A-Level schools of the coastal areas in Sri Lanka about the reasons of earthquakes and tsunamis.

We prepared teachers to be able to run lessons for pupils in the future. Therefore the TEP Team was running geography workshops. Here is an insight in the workshops held by the TEP. The photos are arranged according to the course of each workshop.

Start of workshop

Thorsten and 1st map (in the background) showing the cross-section of the earth to describe what is happening inside our planet

2nd map is used to explain that the surface of the earth has been changing since millions of years

Sandra is pointing to the African Plate on the 3rd map which describes plate tectonics of the earth

For better understanding of plate tectonics the TEP designed and created a special puzzle map which consists of seven parts representing the six main plates of our planet

Thorsten demonstrating different types of Earth Plate movement (in the left hand) caused also by magma (in the right hand imitated by plastic clay)

Teachers from the Thirukkovil Division (Ampara District) learning about plate tectonics

Janis and the 4th map explaining the earthquake which happened in front of Indonesia on December 26th, 2004

Chocolate cakes are used during the workshops for better understanding of different layers of the earth

Two stones help to imitate different kinds of plate movement and following earthquakes

A bowl filled with water and sand in the bottom to show the difference between waves which are caused by wind and earthquake

Demonstrating waves in the water bowl for "HELP" staff in Thirukkovil

Sandra describing a tsunami on the 5th map

After each workshop the participants have to fill out a questionnaire with questions about the topics of the workshop. This lets TEP to evaluate the knowledge of the audience
